Wünnowdelta
empty although I was driving straight through late afternoon rush hour.
Back in Neukölln I almost felt like returning to a small and peaceful
village. I took a short stroll around the block to buy a new
toothbrush and check out my old new neighbourhood.
I like Berlin. I am glad to be back. I miss New York but I guess
somehow I feel that I belong here.
For the next few days I was awfully jetlaged. My whole sleeping
rhythm was messed up - in fact there was no pattern or rhythm at all.
I slept 2 times a day for about 5 and 2 hours. I was always tired - I
still am and my head keeps spinning when thinking about how much I
have to do and work on during the next few weeks.
On friday I fled the city. I went to an old ruin -
a red brick building in a small town next to Germanys biggest lake:
the Müritz. The oldest part of the house was build in the beginning
of the 19th century then it went through some major construction
around 1900. In 2000 it was almost falling apart and the roof was severely damaged. With a bit of funding and a lot of hard work it got a new roof and some of the outside walls were fixed or replaced. I love that house.
I have a desk on the top floor under the roof from where I can
oversee the delta of the river Wünnow that goes straight into the
Müritz. I hear frogs and bees and many many birds. Sometimes a horse
seems to talk to a dog and a cat sneaks around and catches mice. I go there whenever I need to get out of the city. I have icecream for lunch, bbq for dinner and fresh mint tea for breakfast.
It is a hot day, almost 30 degrees Celsius but a nice breeze makes it
bearable. Small motorboats cruise along the Wünnow and in the
distance I can even see a huge white sail of a larger yacht.
Trees are dancing in the wind, shaking their heads as if they are
listening to a ZZ Top classic. I play some tunes on my mp3 player -
not too loud so that it mixes with the wind and birds and the quiet
distant roar of the motorboats. My new old favourite record at the
moment is Talk Talk´s Laughing Stock. (Thanks to Koen who
reintroduced me to that band) So quiet and soothing and yet so
playful with short unexpected experimental interventions. Incredibly
well mixed and way ahead of most 80s bands. Laughing Stock is Talk
Talk´s fifth and final album recorded in 1991. Some of their records
where recently reissued and if you are looking for a new record to
buy check out Talk Talk - it´s definitely worth it.
